Wow! Where did October go? Now that Back to School and Halloween excitement is over, the kids are excited about the holidays! Some are already thinking of Christmas! But, wait, lets not forget Thanksgiving!   I find that this time of year can bring a special challenge … keeping the students engaged. They just might be distracted by the upcoming Holidays! So, I like to do everything I can to incorporate the Holidays into my lessons and activities as a way to keep them engaged at school.

Make a Math Scavenger Hunt!

A Math Scavenger Hunt is a great way to get your students moving while they are practicing Math skills!  Type up or write some problems for your students, number them and post them around the classroom or homeschool room!  Give them a piece of paper or a fancy “record sheet” to record their answers as they work around the room.  This is also a fun way for parents to review skills with their children at home before a test!

Getting Ready For Halloween!

Wow!   The stores are stocked with Halloween candy already!  Last year I bought some ahead of time to be prepared, and “OOPS“, we ended up eating it and had to restock!  So, this year I am waiting a little longer to stock up. However, I did buy a small amount of candy corn the other day so we could enjoy a little pre-Halloween treat!

Tips and Resources for Rounding

Rounding is an important math skill that is difficult for some students to really get. There are some great songs, rhymes, and “tricks” to help students memorize rounding rules.  However, it is important make sure students engage in activities to help them understand the meaning of rounding before the tricks. Really understanding the meaning helps them to remember the rules later and apply estimating skills in different situations. It also helps to build a stronger number sense and understanding of how mathematics works. Back to School – Getting your child ready for a great year in Math!

Some of you are cringing and some of you are celebrating, and most of us are somewhere in between, but one thing is for sure. Summer is in its final stages and school is just around the corner. There are back to school sales everywhere. Now is the perfect time to get deals on supplies, clothes, backpacks, and new shoes. Now is also the perfect time to help your child prepare for a successful year academically. I am not suggesting a full  day of rigorous home schooling before school starts, but some basic review of last years skills and preview of this years’ skills can give your child a huge head start for going back to school!     Continue reading
